Historic Monmouth

Medieval Stone Gated Bridge over the River Monnow

Monmouth is a quaint market town situated, as its Welsh name suggests across the River Monnow: Trefynwy – meaning “town on the Monnow”

This picturesque town was established c.1067 after Monmouth Castle was built by the Normans. The stone gated bridge is the last of its kind remaining in Britain.

There is a wealth of history to explore in this county. Including ruins of many small medieval castles that still adorn the countryside, notably at Raglan, Chepstow and Caldicot. Notable architecture also includes the ruins of a Cistercian abbey at Tintern and an Augustinian priory at Llanthony.

3.2km (2m) from the England – Wales border and just 182km (113m) west of London. Monmouth has become a tourism centre at the heart of the Wye Valley.

Travelling to this market town is made easy with good road connections from the North via the M50 & M6 or from the East along the M4 or from the South West on the M5 and over the Severn Bridge.
